What is Proxy?
A proxy server is a server that acts as an intermediary for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers. Basically, it is another computer which serves as a hub through which internet requests are processed. By connecting through one of these servers, your computer sends your requests to the proxy server which then processes your request and returns what you want. In this way it serves as an intermediary between your personal machine and the rest of the computers on the internet.
Why use Proxy?
Hide from hackers and network spies
With unencrypted web browsing every website you visit will be accessible by your internet service provider and anyone else spying on your network.
Anonymous Search
Surf websites anonymously in complete privacy. Hide your IP address ('online fingerprint') and route your internet traffic through anonymous proxy servers.
Bypass internet restrictions
If the destination server filters content based on the origin of the request, the use of a proxy can circumvent this filter. For example, a server using IP-based geolocation to restrict its service to a certain country can be accessed using a proxy located in that country to access the service. Likewise, an incorrectly configured proxy can provide access to a network otherwise isolated from the Internet.
Hide your IP address
Your IP address is your 'online fingerprint'. Use proxy to hide your true online identity and hide behind one of anonymous IP's.
Types of Proxy:
Transparent Proxy
This type of proxy server identifies itself as a proxy server and also makes the original IP address available through the http headers. These are generally used for their ability to cache websites and do not effectively provide any anonymity to those who use them. However, the use of a transparent proxy will get you around simple IP bans. They are transparent in the terms that your IP address is exposed, not transparent in the terms that you do not know that you are using it (your system is not specifically configured to use it.)
Anonymous Proxy
This type of proxy server identifies itself as a proxy server, but does not make the original IP address available. This type of proxy server is detectable, but provides reasonable anonymity for most users.
Distorting Proxy
This type of proxy server identifies itself as a proxy server, but make an incorrect original IP address available through the http headers.
High Anonymity Proxy
This type of proxy server does not identify itself as a proxy server and does not make available the original IP address.
What is the difference between Proxy and VPN (Virtual Private Network)?
The main purpose of using both VPN and proxy servers is to conceal the users identity, or to spoof a certain geographic location. For example many TV streaming websites, such as Netflix, are banned outside their country of origin. Using a VPN or Proxy service will enable you to access these websites.
VPN is superior in almost every way to proxies. It provides vastly improved online anonymity, and protects your entire online life because, unlike a Proxy, a VPN service provider encrypts all of your traffic, replacing your ISP and routing traffic through the VPN server, including all programs and applications. This also will use all benefits of the VPN server such as (Speed, Geographic Location, and Security).
The VPN can be easily connected or disconnected with the click of a button. So in conclusion VPN is a more effective means of bypassing ISP or geo-IP blocking.
